Shark Week

Teeth. Jaws. Action.

August 1st-7th is Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, which is a mixed blessing for anybody concerned with shark conservation. Although this event brings sharks into the spotlight, it still promotes the false notion that sharks are frequently dangerous towards humans. This popular misconception has led people to believe that sharks are evil animals that don’t deserve to be protected. Take a look at Harry – how could that be true?

Although Discovery deserves some props for spicing up their Shark Week website with interactive games and putting in a word about shark conservation, it’s time to celebrate the shark truth (clever ain’t it?) my friends. Here’s what we have planned this week:

(1) Shark (Art) Attack – Keep your eyes and fins out for a surprise public art display in Vancouver this weekend (Aug 6-7th) that will pay homage to our majestic friends the sharks and remind us what Shark Week should really be about – conservation. (Hint: chaulk and concrete involved.) There will be a chance for locals to win a Harry t-shirt, contest details to come.

(2) Shark Truth(s) – We will be posting a shark fact of the day on Facebook and Twitter for Shark Week where we are presenting little known items about sharks and their impact and place in the world.

Shark Week is upon us so let’s celebrate this phenomenal animal that has lived over 400 million years on this earth.
