Last night, Shark Truth was announced as one of Tides Canada’s Top 10 recipients for 2011! Each year, Tides Canada recognizes the nation’s most innovative and forward-thinking projects and organizations. The award highlights organizations that have demonstrated outstanding leadership, vision and real-world impact in addressing today’s most pressing environmental and social problems. Our Campaign Advisor, Joanna Hui, went to the awards ceremony to accept the award on our behalf. From Joanna:
Last night, I had the honour of representing Shark Truth as the Campaign Advisor in accepting the Tides Top 10 Award held at the Urbanspace Gallery in Toronto. It was an amazing evening in a spectacular space, with incredible food and a crowd of inspirational leaders from across Canada.
This was my first time attending a nonprofit event and I admit, I was a little nervous at first. But right when I walked into the room, I felt the warmth and positive energy flowing and immediately became excited to learn about all the unique social and environmental initiatives people are involved in.
The ceremony showcased the work of Shark Truth plus nine award recipients. I have been diving deep into shark conservation this past six months from my work on the Toronto shark fin campaign, so it was refreshing and humbling to hear about how others are making the world a better place: from local food initiatives, to anti-oppression training in schools, to innovative solutions for clean water in developing countries.
Shark Truth was chosen as a Tides Top 10 because of our unique approach to conservation: it’s the only shark conservation organization in Canada that has a special focus on the Chinese community. Not only is this important for our immediate goals of shark conservation, but it engages the community for the long-run to discuss other important environmental issues. Last night truly reminded me what an important role we play in the environmental movement!
