Contest Update: The contest is open to couples who are getting married/or have gotten married between January 2008 to December 2010. Register now for a chance to win.

As you may know shark fin soup is most popularly served at wedding banquets — and is threatening to push sharks to extinction. This is why Shark Truth is launching the Happy Hearts Love Sharks wedding contest today to reward couples who want to Stop the Soup at their wedding banquet!

Are you or somebody you know getting married this year?

Send in your photo or video pledge to Stop the Soup at your wedding banquet and the couple with the most votes will win one of our three awesome prizes! Couples that have recently* gotten married and did not serve shark fin soup at their wedding are also eligible for our contest. Tell us why you didn’t serve shark fin soup at your Chinese banquet!

Hug a Shark at the Chinese New Year Parade

February 16th, 2010

If you’re in Vancouver, you would know what a weekend of festivities it has been – and we were a part of it! Wake (local shark education group) and Shark Truth partnered together to create a positive message for the Chinese New Year parade in a packed Chinatown on Sunday 14th of February. 15 volunteers representing both organizations went to show off our hand-made foam sharks and fin hats by getting people to “Hug a Shark Today”.

We distributed over 800 red pockets that contained ‘lucky money’ (a chocolate coin) and a dual-language flyer that adapted the ‘Year of the Tiger’ to the tongue-in-cheek ‘Year of the Tiger Shark’. The flyers explained why sharks are endangered and included three facts about sharks and shark fin soup. 150 fortune cookies (with positive messages about sharks inside them) were also given out, but the biggest crowd-pleaser was the hugging.

Hundreds of people of all ages flocked to embrace our costume clad crew and get their pictures taken with our cuddly sharks and wonderfully bubbly and cheerful volunteers. All in all a massive success!

Red Pocket Goodness

Because of our actions, the future is looking a lot brighter for our fin-happy friends! Check out some of the photos, we would love to hear your comments! Gong Hay Fat Choy and Happy Year of the Tiger Shark :)
