Happy Year of the Tiger (Shark)

February 9th, 2010

Year of the Tiger Banner

With only 6 more days left until Chinese New Years, Harry and the Shark Truth team are getting really excited for all the community festivities. As some of you may know, Chinese New Year is based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar and Chinese Zodiac and this year it’s the year of the Tiger. But we think it should be year of the Tiger Shark!

Year of the Tiger Chinese New Year Flyer

Why? Here is a message from Harry:

“I know this year is the ‘Year of the Tiger’ but I think it should be ‘Year of the Tiger Shark’. Tiger sharks are one of the 450+ species in my family that are being overfished for shark fin soup. Please help save our fins by celebrating the beautiful and majestic tiger shark this year.”

To help spread Harry’s message and to celebrate CNY, we will be heading out to the Vancouver Chinese New Year Chinatown Parade this Sunday, February the 14th with local shark education group, Wake. Look for our fun shark costumes and fin headbands as we hand out Chinese New Year goodies like red pockets and fortune cookies.

We won’t be in the parade line up but will be at the parade hanging around and meeting new people. Come find our shark costumes and say hi to Harry!

Protect Chagos

Save Harry's fins by signing this petition to protect Chagos!

Chagos is an island in the middle of the British Indian Ocean Territory and has the potential to be a huge marine reserve. Did you know:

  • 50 tonnes of open-ocean shark species are caught accidentally every year by legal fisheries in Chagos waters
  • At least 60 species listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Endangered Species are found in the Chagos Islands.

Help save Harry’s family by signing the petition [link].

Shark Truth Visits the Aquarium

February 9th, 2010

Many thanks to Jennie and the volunteers of the Vancouver Aquarium for giving Shark Truth a behind the scenes tour of the aquarium. The Shark Truth team proves you’re never too old to be a student. Any local Vancouverites out there should definitely check out what’s new at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Happy Holidays from Harry

December 22nd, 2009
Holiday Banner

If you love Harry as much as we do, sponsor a Yao Ming billboard in China for his holiday gift to Stop the Soup. Started by WildAid and Shark Savers, the billboard campaign takes a big step – and the first step – in promoting consumer awareness. As WildAid says, “when the buying stops, the killing can too”.

For only $100, you can fund a bus stop billboard advertisement featuring basketball superstar Yao Ming. Public awareness is essential to help save Harry’s fins and if you didn’t know already, faces like Yao Ming (the coolest NBA player by Harry’s books) will play a key role in getting the message through to the everyday consumer.

A Case Study

During 2009, WildAid put up 200 billboards in Beijing for 3 months. Here’s what they found in a followup survey:

  • 19% of Beijingers responding remembered having seen the boards
  • 82% of those people said they would stop or reduce their consumption of shark fin soup

Case in point: public awareness works.

Harry wishes you happy holidays!

Shark Truth Updates| The Shark Truth team is taking the time this holiday to plan our activities for the new year. Launch Event Wrap Up

November 20th, 2009

Harry sends his thanks :)

Feature: Launch Event

Yesterday was the Shark Truth launch event and fundraiser at Wild Rice restaurant. We had an amazing turn out. 130 people filled up the restaurant for a sold out show with their positive energy and support. Thanks to our guests and our generous sponsors, we raised over $2000 to Stop the Soup! The campaign is off to a great start and we’ll be using the proceeds to fund our 2010 goal to Stop the Soup at 40 Weddings. (We’re sure Harry is proud). Our job now is to pick a date to launch the competition and look for sponsors to contribute honeymoon prizes for the lucky couples who pledge to Stop the Soup at their wedding.

Psst…Pass it on!

We had Harry puzzles on the table so if you picked up a Truth puzzle piece, don’t forget to pass it on to a friend. Keep the message circulating!
