Sharks Will Black Out to Speak Out

May 31st, 2012

Tomorrow, Shark Truth joins hundreds of organizations and thousands of citizens across Canada who will darken their websites in response to the the omnibus budget Bill C-38 being introduced by the federal government. The Bill includes changes that would weaken many of the country’s most important environmental protection measures and silence the voices of all Canadians who seek to defend nature.

At the heart of it, Bill C-38 is not only undemocratic, it threatens the voice and input from Canadians and will have significant impact on decisions and policies made for Canada and our environment.

Shark Truth is an organization that advocates for sharks, our marine ecosystem and our environment. We strongly believe our work is only effective if we have real democracy in Canada and are not unjustly silenced by the government.

Join us to fight for the right to do our basic work and protect nature and its animals. Here are the Top 5 Reasons To Speak Out.

5 Ways You Can Take Action:

  • Sign the petition to stop Bill C-38
  • Call or email your local MP and tell them that you support democracy and oppose Bill C-38. Find  your local MP’s contact information here.
  • Ribbonize your Facebook profile picture
  • Tweet your support for democracy using #blackoutspeakout

Port Moody and Restaurants Going Fin Free

May 22nd, 2012

Global TV News Coverage, May 22

This evening Port Moody became the first Fin Free city in British Columbia by enacting legislation to ban the trade, sale, and distribution of shark fin products in their municipality. Port Moody joins the cities of Toronto, Brantford, Mississauga, Oakville, Newmarket, Pickering, and London in Ontario who have similar legislation.

It’s not just cities taking action, restaurants are too: Vancouver restaurants and businesses are seeing the change in tides and are starting to remove shark fin products from their menu and inventory and are looking to add sustainable alternatives. Shark Truth is actively working with Chinese restaurants and businesses in the greater Vancouver area who have already removed shark fin products from their establishments.

By actively engaging local restaurant and business owners in the second largest Chinese restaurant industry in North America, there is an opportunity to support those that go Fin Free and to help them become recognized leaders within the restaurant industry – leaders that other restaurants can aspire to be and follow suit in protecting sharks, and the environment.

What you can do to support the Fin Free movement:

  • Sign up for updates on restaurants and businesses that go Fin Free and the opportunity to come celebrate their decision. Be part of the growing movement that will show restaurants and businesses that there is a demand and overwhelming support for Fin Free establishments.
  • Sign the online National Shark Fin Import Ban Petition
