MYTH: Sharks are vicious and dangerous to humans
Truth: Falling vending machines kill more humans annually than shark attacks.
The media sensationalizes shark attacks. The reality is that an attack by a shark is rare. Looking at the anatomy of the shark, they are not designed to feed on anything larger than the size of their mouth. The majority of sharks feed on fish and shellfish, not surfers and swimmers.
Compare these statistics:
Shark related deaths are less than 10 people a year.
Tigers and elephants kill 100 people a year.
Tigers and elephants are internationally protected. While 3/4 of oceanic sharks are threatened with extinction they have no legal protection. Each year up to 77 million sharks are hunted for their fins.
