MYTH: Eating Shark Fin Soup can improve your health.

TRUTH: Shark meat and their fins contain high levels of mercury.

Shark Fin Soup is prized for its health benefits. Some of the health claims include curing cancer, improving skin health, and being an aphrodisiac. While none of these claims have any scientific backing, what has been proven is that there are elevated mercury levels in sharks.

When sharks consume fish that have been polluted with mercury, the mercury stays within their meat, skin and cartilage. Shark Fin has some of the highest levels of mercury in seafood, several times that of tuna. The mercury humans consume will never leave our system. High levels of mercury can cause birth defects when consumed by pregnant women, as well as cause sterility in men.
