MYTH: Shark Fin Soup is a great symbol of wealth because its so valuable and expensive.

TRUTH: While shark fins can cost up to $300 USD per pound at the restaurant, the fisherman who catches the fin sells it for $0.80.

So what happens to the other $299 dollars? Most of this money goes to feed all the middlemen in between the oceans and the restaurant. In addition to businessmen who profit off of the shark fin trade, shark finning has ties to organized crime and the black market who illegally fish for sharks.

The truth is that a pound of shark fin is about as valuable as a pack of bubble gum. And all that money being spent on a bowl of soup funds the black market and the slaughter of upwards of 77 million sharks a year.
